Yesterday was travel day, obviously. The flights were long and boring and it seemed like it took forever to get to DTW, the airport in Detroit. I've got some stats to share with you, which is rather boring but the truth and exactly what happened on the way to the doors to the lobby at the airport.
- Number of security checks: 4. One before and one after each flight. The last one was at customs in Detroit and they took forever and also wanted to look at every single item in my bags. After been watching Border Control Australia and New Zealand, I knew what to expect from the customs but also I knew what not to say or bring. I didn't bring anything illegal but they probably thought it was fun to either mess with me or they actually had doubts of letting me in their country. It started with one officer who asked me questions while looking through my luggage, and another one looking through my bag and backpack. Then suddenly there are 8 different officers at the station I'm at, of whom 4 asked me questions. They ended up sending out 2 of them to find Jess and talk to her, I'd loved to see her reaction when they called and then when they got there. Tho' after the talk with Jess they came back and I got my passport back and I got let into the US, not smoothly and discreet that I had hoped for.
- Number of toilet visits: 8, but I've probably forgot about a few. A lot of them came very close to each other. Two of them were just during the wait to board the flight in Amsterdam after the security check. And four (or maybe even five) of them were during the 8 hour flight from Holland to Michigan.
- Number of requests to take my tray at the flight: 9,within 20 min. And when I finally had finished my lunch no one came and asked for it so I had to push the bottom and make them come and get it.
- Number of movies and episodes watched in 8 hours: 3 movies; Clash of the Titans, Kick Ass and Damn United. 3 episodes; one of CSI: New York, one Chelsea Handler special episode and another one which I can't remember.
- Number of hours without any sleep: 26. All those hours without any sleep and I still didn't feel that tired when we finally went to bed. It was like any other night.
So far of what I've seen of Michigan and Grand Rapids, where I'm having my base for this trip, is very similar to how it's like at home. The nature is pretty much the same, but the weather is way better! When we landed at 1.30pm local time (7.30pm in Sweden), it was 18 degrees Celsius. It's like summer at home, I think I'll like this! Tho obviously they got pretty bad winters since I saw sings saying "Bridge may be icy" more or less e v e r y w h e r e where there were a bridge. Signs here is cooler than at home, I'll try to take photos of my favorites.
The University Jess is at is really beautiful, we drove through there on the way to her apartment. It's big buildings which has really cool architecture and I already know there will be some sweet photos coming from there. Also, Downtown has a lot of photo opportunities as well. I saw this really cool building with glass walls, working their way as huge mirrors for the city, and you can see the city's reflection on there on one side and on the other side you can see the reflection of the forest. It's really sweet! The apartment Jess is sharing, is nice. They've got carpets on the floor, which is very England! But it's nice cozy carpets so if I get mad at Jess she can just sleep on the floor, no big difference. Looking out from the window of our room, there's a corn field. It's nice to have the window facing an open space of nature instead of another house with people around, more privacy that way.
This is a lot written by me for being the first day here. I will probably go outside and take some photos of the house and stuff either today or sometime next week when my fish eye adapter has arrived! Then I can take even more awesome photos than before!
Now it's time to catch up with some studies and probably take a nap later. Also change the time on my computer, right now it's 4pm which is so not true!
